Let’s face it. Not many of you want to read through all of that. Let’s get down to the fun stuff. Can you plug in your blender? Sure! Curling iron? Sure! Guys, how about those power tools? Does going solar mean you have to give up your power tools? No Way!
The type of solar panels you see on most homes and business are PV panels or Photovoltaic solar panels. PV Panels convert light into energy. The technology started out being used on spacecrafts. Wow, we’ve come a long way since the 1960’s. Panels are smaller, more efficient and now ready for home use.
PV Panels are made up of Solar Cells. Each cell produces just a small amount of energy, so we need them connected together into panels. Connect the panels and you have an array. Now, looking at those solar panels, they just look like funky glass mirrors with lines, don’t they? Let’s look at what’s inside…
Inside there are two layers of crystals, Silicon crystal that is. They are really thin wafers that are placed on top of each other. The top layer is treated so that the atoms are unstable. We know what you’re thinking…unstable? How can this be good? Well basically it means that the atoms each have an extra electron. They really want to lose that extra electron.
The bottom layer is also treated. But these atoms are missing; you guessed it, an electron! They would really like to have that electron back. So, why don’t those topside electrons just run down to the bottom atoms and jump in? They can’t move around without light. Light makes the magic happen. The electrons begin to move back and forth freely with the energy from light. Now we add metal contacts on both sides of the silicon, top and bottom and now the energy is moving through a circuit. Now we have DC power. Uh oh… we need AC…now the energy runs through an inverter and is converted to AC and then pumped into your house to run your toys, games and appliances!
